The site's critical consensus reads, "Cacophonous, thinly plotted, and boasting state-of-the-art special effects, The Last Knight is pretty much what you'd expect from the fifth installment of the Transformers franchise.
Peter Travers of Rolling Stone gave the film a zero-star review as he did to the previous films , saying "Every time Michael Bay directs another Transformers abomination this is the fifth , the movies die a little.
This one makes the summer's other blockbuster misfires look like masterpieces. But I can say with absolute certainty that after watching, your head will hurt.
But it's more fun than "Age of Extinction," though both movies are so drunk on money and effects they accidentally go weird.
Farley noted the marketing made Moner appear to have a prominent role in the film, when she does not. Schwartz criticizes Wahlberg's character for referring to Moner's as "Little J.
Schwartz also criticized the film for the frequent aspect ratio changes, and the runtime being too long. It is amazing how a series with so much nostalgic goodwill, technical finesse and behind the scenes talent have led so often to experiences that are so joyless.
Variety 's Owen Gleiberman gave the film a mixed review stating, "The fifth time may not quite be the charm, but the latest entry in Michael Bay's crunched-metal robot-war mega-series is badder, and therefore better.
This one's his most Baysome. A spin-off titled Bumblebee , starring Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena , was released on December 21, to a successful critical and financial reception.
In an interview with Slash Film on December 10, , producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura announced that there will continue to be further films in the series following the release of Bumblebee , acknowledging that the franchise will make some changes in their tone and style.
The Last Knight was originally developed as the first installment from a writers room style brain trust that was established to map out the future of the Transformers films over the next several years.
In March , Paramount hired Academy Award winner film writer Akiva Goldsman to bring together a group of writers and pitch ideas for future Transformers films with the intention of expanding the franchise into a cinematic universe.
At least 12 films had been planned for the cinematic universe with Goldsman overseeing development of a multi-part sequel storyline along with prequels and spin-off films that were to follow.
Before the release of The Last Knight , Michael Bay said it would be his last film in the franchise but expressed interest in remaining as a producer should they wish to continue the series with another director.
Bay confirmed in April that out of the writers room, at least 14 stories had been completed for potential future Transformers films. Following The Last Knight's' negative reception and disappointing box office performance, the future of the series was uncertain.
By August , Akiva Goldsman revealed he was no longer leading the writers room, and had left the franchise. On February 16, , Senior designer of the brand John Warder confirmed Hasbro's plans for the sequel had been postponed and on May 23, Paramount removed the sequel from their release schedule.
In a March interview, while promoting Bumblebee in Japan, Di Bonaventura claimed that sequels to both the solo film and The Last Knight were in development.
He said "One is the latest in the main family series following Transformers: The Last Knight and the other is a sequel to Bumblebee ".
In May , it was reported that Paramount scheduled a release date of June 24, for the next live-action Transformers film, though it has not been announced whether or not it is a continuation of The Last Knight.
By January , it was announced that both a follow up to Bumblebee , and an adaptation of Transformers: Beast Wars were in development; written separately by Joby Harold and James Vanderbilt , respectively.
Barrer and Ferrari are writing a new draft of their "Transformers One" script, with Cooley. The story will take place entirely on Cybertron, and will explore the relationship between Optimus Prime and Megatron, "separate and apart" from what has been portrayed in the live action films.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are expected to be the producers. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Theatrical release poster.

OK, that did it, I'm Done with watching Transformers movies at the theater. I will just wait until the next movies are on video or ready to stream.
I am a huge Transformers fan and I know the mythology well but this movie takes the mythology and flips it upside down and backward.
As a movie on its own, it is a hot mess of bad writing, editing, and pacing. BUT Michael does know how to shoot a "scene" but they are strung together incoherently.
So What I Liked were the music and the effects. That's pretty much it. Steve Jablonsky's score was over times better than this movie deserves.
I really like how he brought back some of the original themes but made them the sound of desperation.
The confusing climax had this mellow desperate theme you hear in the trailer that in a better movie would have worked very well but it does nothing for you because whats on screen is in the way.
Just listen to those tracks and if you have a filmmaking state of mind you can imagine a better movie with those tones.
I know it's all CGI that we have seen before but the imagery that was composed is awesome to look at especially the climax with the parts of the planet hanging down and "scraping" earth.
This is by far, to me, the worst edited movie in history. Like I said Michael Bay films the scenes very well like the opening battle but when they are put together you have no idea what the hell is going on.
And then the noticeable aspect ratio. So nobody in the editing room noticed that different shots had black bars at the top and bottom disappearing then reappearing.
This happens because some shots were shot in IMAX. He knows how to shoot a sequence but that's all it has going for it.
If you watch a couple of shots on YouTube before seeing the movie you would be like "wow that looks like a good movie" NO it's just a good shot and sequence.
And supposedly they had a writers room come up with a plot by using Transformers mythos, HUH? Well, a lot of things irked me.
Without giving away any spoilers I'm gonna name the mythos they got wrong if you are a Transformers fan then you'll know what Im talking about I am so glad that Michael Bay is going to step down as director of this series because obviously, he does not care about the problems these films have.
I say hire an up a coming director who gives a damn about making a good movie and not in it for the cash grab. But as for now, I am done spending my money in hopes of a great movie experience.

At times "The Last Knight" almost feels like it could work, again the plot is bananas and Bay seems to have abandoned some of his worst impulses but ultimately he just doesn't put the work in to make something that could have been enjoyable.
And that is what makes this franchise such an oddity. There are five movies that are entirely the vision of a single auteur who just never cared.
Alec B Super Reviewer. Sep 25, It should be obvious, to the one person who probably follows my reviews on RottenTomatoes since I haven't reviewed a film in this franchise on Letterboxd yet , that I've never been a big fan of the Transformers franchise.
I'll be honest, I thought the first movie at the time was solid popcorn entertainment. But that was still before we were bombarded, figuratively and literally, by these movies.
Summer blockbusters have always been about casual, popcorn entertainment, but I do think that there weren't many movies, at the time, like the original Transformers.
So, in a way, you could say it stood out and, again, at the time, it was an entertaining movie. With that said and, now, four sequels later three of which I've seen , I don't know if I could go back and say that the original was a good movie, if I were to watch it again.
But, yes, for all intents and purposes, I enjoyed the original movie at the time. Revenge of the Fallen, in my opinion, has been one of the worst movies I've ever seen in an actual movie theater.
I absolutely loathed that movie. It got one star one RT because the special effects were still excellent. If it wasn't for that, I'd have gladly gone half a star, that's how bad Revenge of the Fallen is.
It was so bad that I decided to give myself a break and completely skip the the third installment, Dark of the Moon, entirely.
I haven't gone back to watch that movie and I likely never will. What would be the point??? Enough time has passed between when I saw Revenge of the Fallen almost TEN years ago that Dark of the Moon, as a continuation, would make absolutely no sense to me.
Though, if I am honest, it's not like you'll be able to make much sense of this even if you DO follow this franchise's narrative closely.
At least that of the "original" trilogy. Honestly, I don't know why I came back to the franchise with Age of Extinction. But I suppose the fact that it was a 'new' start with a new cast of human characters and it wasn't so tied to the original trilogy.
I knew that much was not gonna change as long as Michael Bay was still leading the franchise. And, as much of an improvement Age of Extinction was over, it was still a bad movie.
This brings us to The Last Knight which is, hopefully, the last time Michael Bay will ever make us suffer through one of these again.
Ok, so, first things first. Firstly, at the very least, while there are flaws with its narrative, xXx is fairly cohesive from beginning to end.
You know what the goal is for Vin Diesel and his team at all times. Secondly, I liked the cast and the characters ended up growing on you.
Thirdly, Donnie Yen. That's all I got. Seriously though, xXx: Return of Xander Cage was definitely silly, but it was fun, for the most part.
The Last Knight, on the other hand, is the same type of overwrought, overstuffed and bloated nonsense that you've seen for eleven years now.
Not even an astrophysicist could understand even a third of what's going on here, much less decipher any meaning or purpose.
Perhaps that's a bit of an exaggeration, but I am not lying when I tell you had trouble discerning anything about the story.
I know that Cybertron is on a collision course with earth in order to heal itself. Cybertron healing itself will lead to millions of deaths on earth.
That much is fine, it's everything in between that gets you from point A to point B that is so largely terrible.
There's something about Merlin's staff that only a direct descendants of his can wield, there's this talisman that attaches itself to Cade for, really, no real reason other than when it's absolutely convenient for the movie to use it, there's this street urchin that is introduced for, again, no reason whatsoever and serves no actual tangible purpose in the narrative of the movie other than to give Cade someone to care for, there's generic military dudes doing generic military things, there's this engineer played by Tony Hale who's trying to warn the suits that there's imminent danger here.
Two-time Emmy Award Winner Tony fuckin' Hale can't even get a name for his character, that's how inconsequential he is. Oh, Optimus Prime is turned evil by his creator.
Cade and Vivian, naturally, develop a romance because of course they do, despite not having anything in common or, really, even knowing each other.
Megatron comes back and never has he been less effective than he has been in this movie. For SOME reason John Turturro's character returns here, except he's in Cuba, there is this sociopathic transformer Butler that is, actually, the best character in this franchise's history, playing off a cranky Anthony Hopkins.
Hopkins and this butler, Cogman, are the best parts of this movie. I was legitimately entertained by the two. Regardless, the point is to make you see how there's so much shit in this movie.
Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if I missed a couple of things. I don't take notes for movies, that's just not how I do things, so I may have missed more than a few things.
But, again, there's no rhyme or reason to anything that's happening. The film does not let you think in the slightest.
Everything is an attack on your sight and your ears. This might be one of the loudest movies I've ever seen.
This is, obviously, by design, given that if they throw all this shit at you, you won't bother to think about how bad the script actually is at putting together a cohesive and satisfying narrative.
And, I know what you're gonna say, that nobody who's a fan of this franchise comes to it for a story. Fine, that's fair, but then what is the point?
Why is everything happening??? If they made the effort to, at the very least, tell a coherent narrative with a clear beginning, middle and end with no bullshit, maybe they wouldn't hate this fucking franchise so much.
